Some years back our friend Vijeta Das told us about Christopher Alexanders Pattern Language book. Somehow or other we acquired one and it has been the basis of our building..ever since.
What makes a house ..homey? Why do we require natural building materials? Why do we require domed ceilings and how can we achieve all this by working with a community based spirit?
One of Christopher Alexanders other books The Mexicali Project is a must read to see how it can be accomplished. Years later when the participants of this project were interviewed...they expressed their deep satisfaction in living in these homes that they had designed for their own needs and built with their own hands and also with the help of their community.
We would love to see a community based on these principles grow here at Govindas Farm:) I've included a video of Mr. Alexander giving a lecture but it is quite long and you would really need to have the time...big comfy chair.....calm mind set and a steaming cup of herbal tea to listen. I would begin watching about 10 minutes into the video.
